APRIL 2021

Dear friends and well-wishers of TARA,

We hope you all are keeping well during these difficult times, and we wish to express our deep gratitude for your continued support.

New Delhi is currently affected by a new wave of the pandemic, which requires us to redouble our efforts to ensure the protection of children and staff.

Despite the growing concern, we wanted to share with you the news about the children and the projects that have been launched in the last few months!

Happy reading!

The Undefeated - When animation gets mobilised for children!

TARA is proud to launch an international awareness campaign on child protection featuring the stories of TARA's children and caretakers. The stories narrated by the children talk of resilience, self-confidence, the search for identity, but also the essential role played by adults gravitating around them.

Soon, we will publish 15 short animated films inspired by their journeys, giving rise to the series The Undefeated. Animation makes it possible to tackle serious topics and harshest realities with subtlety and sensitivity.

We look forward to sharing this unique campaign with you, as it sheds new light on our work and the struggles the children face.

The Undefeated is the result of a collaboration between the prestigious Gobelins school, Dorothée Adam, a seasoned director, and TARA.

We would like to sincerely thank Dorothée Adam and the team and students of the Gobelins Motion Design Department for believing in and supporting this ambitious project throughout the year 2020. We warmly thank our ambassador, the author Shumona Sinha, who was kind enough to be a part of the final jury.

TARA Outreach Centre's strength!

TARA Outreach Centre was born out of the need to develop prevention and family strengthening activities. Our main objective is to ensure the schooling of children living in extremely precarious conditions while preventing the separation of families (by avoiding the placement of children) through an upstream intervention, directly in the communities. It is about providing solutions and individualized support to families in order to lead their children towards a better future.

The routine that had been created by TARA Outreach Centre team in less than a year of operation was profoundly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we are proud of the support the Centre has been able to provide to families and children since March 2020. The trust with the community has been strengthened and 52 children have been able to attend daily classes at TARA Outreach Centre from October 2020 to April 2021.

On International Women's Rights Day in March, we raised awareness through a session on sexuality to help children understand the concept of physical, moral and emotional integrity. Gender equality and empowerment of girls is also an integral part of the program's objectives. "To realize that as a girl, they can have access to education, just like boys" is the message carried by Akanksha, the Centre's manager, and her team.

In February, we celebrated the 2nd anniversary of TARA Outreach Centre. The program included dance, mime and games that delighted the children and allowed them to escape, for an afternoon, from a much harder daily life.

The second lockdown, which has just been announced, forces us to close our doors temporarily and to adapt our activities once again to the sanitary conditions.

The future of the children in this fragile community is of great concern to us, as the families will quickly find themselves without any income. The risk of dropping out of school increases with every month spent under lockdown, without any access to online schooling. Their dignity is at stake. Our team will continue their fight to help the families throughout this terrible period and to ensure that the children do not move away from the path of learning and are re-enrolled in school when it finally re-opens.

Finals exams in TARA homes

As the academic year ends in March in India, the children of TARA Boys, TARA Girls and TARA Tots, gave their final exams online, as private schools have been closed for a year and offer distance learning.

7 boys in class 10th studied for months only to learn recently that their exams were suspended. Class 10 is a very important step, as the stream they will access in Class 11 and 12 depends on the marks they obtained during this year.

On the other hand, Shyamu, currently in Class 12, is still revising for his Board Exam, without knowing exactly when it will be held!

We asked Shruti, the Child Welfare Officer at TARA Boys, to share with you how the final exams went.

Holi - A festival of Colours

On 28th March, North India celebrated one of the country's most vibrant festivals: 'Holi', also known as the 'Festival of Colours', which marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, a season of joy and hope.

Did you know? Coloured pigments have a specific meaning: orange for optimism, green for harmony, blue for vitality, red and pink for joy and love.

With joy and excitement, the children were able to colour their faces with bright colours!  This year, due to the health crisis, the festivities were held in small groups in each of the TARA homes.

For our dear sponsors: find Holi pictures in your space, accessible from our website. If you have any problems logging in, please contact us at give@taraindia.org
